Green Carbon Finland develops solutions for controlling global warming and reducing emissions that pollute the atmosphere. We work together with Finnish landowners and the forest research sector and are committed to continuously developing our activities.
Purpose
We want to work against climate change with the Finnish companies to help them measure their carbon footprint, find the best way to reduce emissions and offer verified domestic options for offsetting.
From the very beginning, Green Carbon Finland´s goal has been to make sure that our domestic carbon sinks are produced with the highest quality accomplishing all the high international standard criteria for offsetting. As a matter of fact high quality of all the services is the key point in Green Carbon. All the carbon footprint analysis done by Green Carbon are based on GHG protocol and typically measurements covers all the scopes 1, 2 and 3.
Results
Green Carbon Finland is the first and only forest-based carbon
sink producer that has achieved third party verification and
international ISO 14064-2:2019 standard for their carbon sink projects.
That is a welcomed direction where international offset projects have
dominated the markets and verified domestic carbon sinks has
conspicuously been absent. Up to this point, Green Carbon Finland has
mitigated 3500 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere with carbon sink projects
in Finland and by the year 2024, the number will be minimum of 50000
tons of Co2.
Implementation
Forest´s faster growth is a science-based result to get
the best impact from the carbon sink. The “normal” growth of forests is
essential when we fight back the climate change and that growth can not
be used as commercial carbon sinks. More can be done. Green Carbon
Finland works together with Finnish landowners by fertilizing the
forests and this forest “extra growth” – a growth boost is in the core
of the whole offsetting. Measuring the additional growth is based on
long-term studies done by LUKE (Natural Research Institute Finland). To
ensure additionality, validity and transparency all Green Carbon
Finland´s carbon sink projects are verified by a third party.
This Planet act requires very specific competences to organize and implement. The key for making wanted impact is to ensure that users of this service have measured their CO2 emissions and done extensive reduction efforts first and only second utilize offsetting to unavoidable emissions. Using third party verification of the ISO standard implementation increases the credibility of this act and ensures that customer promises of additionality and the validity of the sink projects are delivered.
