The Aim of Seedling Deed

Seedling Deed aims to employ young people in Finland and increase the carbon sinks of Finnish forests. It is done by planting seedlings to areas that have not been in active use of forestry and agriculture for decades. According to The Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners, there are approximately 100,000 hectares of land areas in Finland that are applicable for forestation.

Our aim is to plant 10,000 hectares of new forest by the year 2030. That means a combined amount of roughly 20 million new trees.

Seedling Deed began in 2019. It is a natural way to advance the themes 4H Finland considers important. These include, for instance, sustainable growth, biodiversity, and employment of young people.

In years and decades to come, forests that grow from Seedling Deeds will become learning environments for children and youth involved in 4H activities.

Seedling Deed Employs Young People Responsibly

Forestation offers summer job opportunities for many young people across Finland. In Seedling Deed, the work is being done by people under the age of 18.

The practical planting of the seeds is being coordinated by the local 4H associations. Over 200 local associations hire and make employment contracts for the young employees. The young workers are trained and introduced to the work, and work safety is naturally taken care of.

The objective is to not only give young Finns an opportunity to earn some money but also to teach and develop their work-life skills. They’re also paid on a piece rate.

How the Seedling Deed Was Founded

In January 2019, the Best-Caravan entrepreneur Lasse Sorvari reached out to 4H Finland. His company sells camper vans that people drive across Finland approximately 15,000 kilometers each year, and he wanted to compensate for the CO2 emissions they caused.

The company did a precise CO2 calculation with the help of Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) to evaluate, how many hectares of new forest should be planted annually, in order to compensate for the emissions. The calculator used in Seedling Deed is based on these evaluations.

Based on this idea, Seedling Deed was formed based, and today it is a part of 4H Finland’s strategy. Forestation and forest management have been in 4H’s agenda for a long time, but only Seedling Deed has made it possible to combine the creation of new forest, employment of young people, and another way for organizations to compensate for their CO2 emissions.
